Interview with DELPHINE DE SYON

With the production and exhibition dates fast approaching, we wanted to give you an insight into the mind of Principle Photographer, Delphine De Syon. Delphine is a highly creative individual with a stunning portfolio, but just where does she get her inspiration?

Delphine, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions today. So firstly, in the run up to the exhibition this August, what are your initial thoughts?

It will be the third time that I will have this immense chance to exhibit my photos, but never in a place as prestigious as Covent Garden. I am delighted and I can not wait to be there!

We can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to, has it been difficult to show these well loved characters in a different light?

Inspiration was there since the very beginning. I love to experiment and use different materials to embody the energy of each character. This is the perfect challenge to launch myself into creative a mode and hopefully give some new perspectives on these renowned characters. I hope I have been able to meet such a challenge. It was an honour to pay tribute to Shakespeare.

We understand you were originally an independent photographer, how have you enjoyed working with Mac & Jeal? And congratulations on joining their production team permanently!

We’ve been on the same track since day one. We wanted bold, inspirational, powerful images and we share the same passion for elegance and precision. In addition, the positive mindset of the team and its relentless desire to achieve greatness have been both stirring and uplifting all along. It's been a bliss, really.

What kind of work do you usually do? Is this kind of project out of the norm?

I have worked in a variety of markets. Lifestyle, photo journalism, children’s fashion, high fashion, architecture, interiors etc. Exploring the performing arts creatively has been a long time dream and Mac & Jeal helped me to realise it. I was thrilled and ready for this new challenge.

That’s fantastic, a real team effort. But what can the public expect if they come to view your work?

Powerful feelings. I want my photos to translate a presence and an emotion, and I think this is something I have accomplished through this project.

But what are you most excited for them to see?

I am most excited to see the guest enjoying the images, and them sharing with me what they loved the most! But I would be happy to see them valuing the amount of positive energy and love that has gone into not only the photographs, but the production itself.

So we know you’ve had fun and can’t wait to show us the end result. But what’s different about your work to anyone else at the moment?

It’s definitely more "me" than anything I've done before. Thanks to Mac & Jeal and their incredible confidence, I had the opportunity to be completely free in this project. Which is very precious for a creative like me. It’s a project expressing a facet of my soul and I am very, very proud of it.

Other than this exhibition, where else can we see your work?

You can see my work all over in London. At Sweaty Betty in Carnaby street, at Blue Cow yoga in the City, in Heartcore studios in Chelsea and Kensington.

Thank so much Delphine, but before we go, who is your favourite creative out there at the moment? (Photographer or Artist)

There are so many creatives I love, it would be impossible to chose. I guess my main inspiration has always been Annie Leibovitz. I love her personality, the tone and boldness of her pictures and the simplicity she exudes.

Tickets for the exhibition are free and go on sale this March, so keep your eyes peeled. If you purchase a ticket for the production of Hamlet, you also get private access to the exhibition separately to the public. So get them while they’re hot!

You can see more of Delphine’s work via her website, instagram (@welcometosyon) and purchase prints of all images from the digital store (coming July 2020) or on the day.
